A fascinating video. It is amazing what is happening with the democratization of knowledge, which is one of the most important advancements of the 21st century.
This raises questions for us as educators:
- What is our role in this new system?
- What do we need to do to change and morph to embrace and build onto these new platforms, to make sure that we do not stand in opposition to this new wave of chage?
In a strange way… I feel lost.
We are living in the midst of one of the greatest revolutions in the history of mankind: The Information Age. Few moments in history compare to the one we are currently experiencing… the agricultural and industrial revolution come to mind, with the Gutenburg Press coming in at third. These moments marked colossal changes that turned the world on its proverbial head, changing not just the rules of the game but the very nature of the game itself.
The changes that we are currently experiencing are coming fast and furious. However, the world of education has always had a buffer to such change, as it takes 15-20 years for any real world change to truly impact how education is run (Evidence: There are still more overhead projectors in our schools than computers. Our school FINALLY got rid of our last chalkboards and installed Whiteboards. I feel so… 1990s it hurts). The buffer restraining this tidal wave is nearing its end. I feel like I am riding the crest of a tsunami that I do not fully understand and it is about to come crashing down on my occupation of education whether we like it or not.
This is the basis of the upcoming series: Educating 21. In this series I will chronicling my quest to understand and come to grips with this idea of 21st Century learning:
All questions I do not have the faintest clue how to answer… At least not yet. Each week there will be a new post or two as my research begins to unveil the answers I find.
